Kid Drama: "Vždycky jsem tvořil mnoho stylů..."

Společně s dBridgem a autonomicem jste sklidili ohromný úspěch. Proč jste ho s Alem Boddikou opustili a začali dělat techno/bass?

V té době v Anglii žádná techno/bass scéna neexistovala. Spolupracovali jsme s lidmi jako Skream, Scuba či Pearson Sound. Postupně jsme začali různě míchat žánry, třeba electro do dubstepového tempa, ale také jsme objevovali rovné beaty. "Leave It All Behind", "Vicodin", "Tramma", "Let´s Talk" - všechny tyto skladby hráli techno i dubstep DJs. Producenti postupně začali také experimentovat a žánrové hranice mizely. Nemyslím, že jsem se přesunul k jinému stylu, spíš jsem pomohl vytvořit UK techno/bass scénu.



Mimochodem, jaký je tvůj oblíbený layer (jeden z dvanácti dílů) autonomic podcastu?

Neumím vybrat jeden, autonomic podcast vidím jako celek, který se od jedničky do dvanáctky vyvíjel.

Spolupracujete stále s Alem ve studiu?

Jsme stále v kontaktu, zajdeme na kafe a bavíme se o hudbě a technice. Známe se strašně dlouho a sdílíme mnoho společného, třeba vášeň pro synťáky. Zrovna teď jsme ale každý vytížený vlastní tvorbou a svými vlastními životy. Čas teď šíleně letí.



Chybí ti něco ze společné studiové tvorby z dob Instra:mental?

Asi pocit, že tvoříš něco úplně nového bez ohledu na jakékoliv hranice a užíváš si to. 

Jaké skladby od Instra:mental si ceníš nejvíc?

Hmm... Když je tak znovu poslouchám, je jich mnoho. Povinná by asi měla být "Watching You". Cítím, že měla ohromný nadstylový potenciál. Asi vyšla jen v blbou dobu. 



Proč ses po odbočce k rovných beatům vrátil zase na 170 BPM jako Kid Drama?

Já jsem nikdy neodešel. Lidé vidí pouze releasy, ne práci ve studiu. Vždycky jsem experimentoval s mnoha styly. Třeba skladbu "One 6 Eight" pro kompilaci "Mosaic 2" na značce Exit jsem složil před mnoha lety. Jsem taky členem projektu Binary Collective (složeného z umělců kolem dBridge). Na obou jsem pracoval v dobách, kdy jsem se prezentoval jako Jon Convex (Damonův techno/bass pseudonym, pozn. aut.). Vždycky mám rozběhlých vícero projektů... 

Dostávals hodně prosebných e-mailů, aby ses vrátil?

Ano, přišlo jich dost. Pro mě je ale zásadní dostat se do určité psychické pohody, abych se plně do tvorby ponořil...

Takže uděláte šest vydání a šmitec?

Heart Drive podcasty, stejně jako předtím autonomic, zachycují určitý moment. Jsem si jistý, že něco bude následovat, ale zatím jsme s nimi neskončili. Sami tak netušíme co... 

Jaká je zásadní skladba, která tě přivedla k tvorbě?

Žádná taková není. Pouze jsem léta sledoval hudbu, jak se vyvíjí a mění. Nakonec mi došlo, že chci tvořit, abych se dozvěděl, jak vznikají zvuky, které jsem miloval. Ale myslím, že "Dark Side Of The Moon" od Pink Floyd mě jako dítě uhranula. Ta práce se synťáky a textura hudby...



Jaký je Tvůj nejoblíbenější soundTrack?

Není to asi překvapivé, ale největší vliv na mě měl Vangelisův "Blade Runner". 

Co posloucháš vedle elektroniky?

Všechno. Kapely jako Blonde Redhead a Beach House. Slyšel jsem je naživo a byly skvělé! Mám také "guilty pleasures" jako Drake.



Jaká nová jména bychom si podle tebe měli ohlídat?

Arca je skvělý. Na labelu také spolupracuji s úžasnými umělci jako Mikarma Liife nebo Blackwoods. 

Jakou skladbu v Crossu určitě zahraješ?

Moji "In Mind". Na dobrém zvuku zní skvěle! 



Co plánuješ pro letošní rok?

Releasy nových umělců, ale také zavedených jmen pod jinými aliasy pro můj label CNVX. Chci nechat promluvit hudbu, ne podsouvat posluchači očekávání spojená se jmény. Aktuálně s dBridgem děláme na novém materiálu Heart Drive. Další release na Pleasure District vyjde právě od nás. Druhý singl CNVX bude Kid Drama versus Skeptical a Consequence, vydám ho koncem měsíce jako download a vinyl.

Britský producent a DJ Kid Drama, polovina projektu Instra:mental, se představí již tuto sobotu 21. března na akci Volnej Průběh Crossem 09 v klubu Cross!

You, Al and dBridge were very succesful with the autonomic sound. Why did you quit and moved to bass/techno?

There wasnt really any "bass" techno scene in the UK, as we worked with dubstep artists like Skream, Scuba, Pearson Sound etc... The genres started to cross pollenate and we were injecting electro into a dubstep tempo and also exploring 4x4 stuff... "Leave It All Behind", "Vicodin", "Tramma", "Let´s Talk" - all these tunes were being played by both dubstep and techno artists and people were starting to experiment and the lines between genres blurred. So I never even considered we had quit and moved to another genre, we actually helped forge the "bass" techno scene in the UK.



By the way, what is your favorite layer?

I really can´t pick one... For me, I see them as a whole body of work as one, watching the podcast evolve from 1 to 12.

Do you still go to studio with Al sometimes?

I speak to Al still and go for coffee and chat music and studio gear, we have known each other for a long time and have the same passion for synths etc... We are just both busy on our own paths at the moment with life and music. Time seems to move so quick these days.

Is there something you miss in the studio from Instra:mental era?

Just the vibe of creating something fresh and not having any boundaries, having fun with it.

Your personal favorite tune from Instra:mental?

Hmm... Theres a lot I like when I listen back. The obvious one would be "Watching You" I feel that could have had crossover potential but was released at maybe the wrong time.



Why did you return to 170 stuff?

I never really left it as such. People only see what you are releasing but never see what you are actually doing in the studio. I´ve always experimented with a wide range of styles. The track "One 6 Eight" on Exit Records "Mosaic 2" was written ages before, also the Binary Collective project... All these were written at the same time I was deep into the Jon Convex stuff, I´ve always got projects on the go.

Did you receive a lot of e-mails by your fans demanding for more of it?

Yeah theres always emails. But for me I have to mentally be in the right place and it to feel right to fully immerse myself in a project.

Tell us the story behind Heart Drive project with Darren. Are you gonna keep it strictly as a producer duo/podcast, or do you plan to evolve it, for example with a live act?

Autonomic started out with the 12 podcasts but become a genre in itself, There was never a plan to 
do more than the 12 podcasts, that was the 3 of us at that moment in time. Heart Drive is Darren and I continuing the next chapter in "Autonomic". The plan is to let it evolve organically and see where it leads.

Any plan after you finish all six episodes?

The Heart Drive podcasts are another captured moment in time and I´m sure something will continue after, we just haven´t got there yet so we don´t even know ourselves.

The key tune that brought you seriously into music?

There´s no key tune, just years of exploring music and watching it evolve and mutate until I realised I wanted to produce music as I wanted to understand how the artists created the sounds I was loving. I think listening to Pink Floyds "Dark Side Of The Moon" as a kid really intrigued me... The synth work and textures.

Your favourite soundtrack ever?

It´s an obvious one but also the one that´s had the biggest impact on me. Vangelis’s "Blade Runner" soundtrack.

What do you listen to apart electronic music?

All sorts really... Bands like Blonde Redhead and Beach House, I´ve seen them live and they´re amazing. I have some guilty music pleasures like Drake... 

Which new musicians/producers should we keep our eyes on?

I think Arca is amazing! I´ve got some great artists working on my new label... Mikarma, Liife, Blackwoods.

Tune you definitely gonna play in Prague?

Kid Drama - "In Mind". It always sounds nice on a good system.

What is next for you, your new label CNVX and Heart Drive?

I´ve got new artists and also artists under secret alias working under secret names etc... For CNVX which is fun. I like to let the music do the talking and not let the listener to know the artist, there´s no pre-judgement or expectations. We are working on new Heart Drive material right now. The next Pleasure District record is Heart Drive. CNVX 002 Kid Drama "Versus" feat. Skeptical & Consequence is going to be out later this month on vinyl and digital.
